Introductory Vocational Nursing Foundations

Examines the definition, functions, responsibilities and roles of the vocational nurse as a member of the health team. Overviews history of nursing. Introduces the ethical/legal aspects of the student and Licensed Vocational Nurse. Defines the nursing process and introduces the concept of culture as it impacts nursing care. Total 36 hours lecture.

Introductory Concepts of Vocational Nursing-Health/Illness
(3 units)
Introductory course on health and its deviations as a foundation for the practice of vocational nursing. Total of 54 hours of lecture.
- Nursing 52: Introductory Concepts of Vocational Nursing-Nursing Fundamentals
(9.5 units)
Focus on provider of care role of the vocational nurse in assisting clients in the adult life cycle states to meet essential activities of daily living. A beginning knowledge of specialized nursing techniques with an understanding of principles, rationales, and procedures for each. Total of 72 hours and 297 hours of clinical/laboratory.
- Nursing 60: Intermediate Vocational Nursing Foundations-Nursing Process/Communication
(1 unit)
Emphasis is on the vocational nursing roles and understanding the five steps of the nursing process to identify clients' basic human needs which require nursing intervention. Total of 18 hours lecture.
- Nursing 61: Intermediate Concepts of Vocational Nursing- Care of the Family
(6 units)
Application of the nursing process in common health/illness situations experienced by families require nursing intervention. Includes care of mothers, infants, children, and adolescents with health problems associated with their age groups. Total of 63 hours lecture and 135 hours clinical/laboratory.
- Nursing 62: Intermediate Concepts of Vocational Nursing-Medical/Surgical
(12 units)
Application of the nursing process to the care of clients with common health/illness problems and needs according to Maslow. Opportunity for development of provider of care role for clients in the adult life cycle stages in a variety of clinical settings, from various ethnic and social backgrounds, and with common medical/surgical conditions. Total of 126 hours of lecture and 270 hours clinical/laboratory.

Intermediate Concepts of Vocational Nursing-Mental Health

Application of the nursing process and principles of mental health in the care of clients, in all health delivery settings, with conditions which interfere with normal intellectual, social and/or emotional behavior and result in disturbed interpersonal relationships. Total of 36 hours lecture and 65 hours clinical/laboratory.

Advanced Vocational Nursing Foundations-Role Transition

Emphasis is on guidance regarding vocational nursing opportunities and on responsibilities in making the transition to the provider of care and member of the discipline of nursing roles of the licensed vocational nurse. Total of 18 hours of lecture.

Advanced application of the nursing process to the care of multiple clients from various ethnic and social backgrounds, in the adult life cycle stages with common health/illness problems/needs. Total of 72 hours of lecture and 189 hours clinical/laboratory.
- Nursing 7:
Nursing Learning Laboratory (elective)
(1 unit) **
An on-campus laboratory designed for self-paced practice and mastery of nursing skills necessary for providing safe client care throughout the program. Total of 54 hours laboratory. Credit/no credit only.
**For students who wish to put more time into self-paced practice in the Nursing Learning Laboratory, Nursing 8 (108 hours, 2 units) or Nursing 9 (162 hours, 3 units) may be taken instead of Nursing 7. Nursing 6 (27 hours, .5 units) is available during Winter and Summer intersession for students who wish to review skills and knowledge in preparation for the upcoming semester.
- Nursing 93:
Calculations for Healthcare
(1.0 unit)
This elective course is designed to help those who need further help with dosage calculation, and includes systems of measurement and principles of dosage calculation for the administration of medications and fluids. Nursing 93 will be offered during Winter and Summer Intersessions.
