Upward Bound

Upward Bound provides economically disadvantaged and first-generation college bound students with access and opportunity to a post-secondary education. Best of all, participation in this program is FREE!!!

The primary goal is for students to graduate from high school and continue their education at a four-year university. The Upward Bound Program is 100% federally funded through the Department of Education, TRIO program.

Services

Upward Bound provides one-on-one academic advising designed to assist high school students with their academic decisions. The program provides a variety of support services, including:

• Tutoring Services: To improve the student's understanding of any subject matter they are having challenges with.
• Mentoring Services: Where various community leaders motivate and nurture the potential of students.
• College and University Visits: Students are introduced to college and university atmospheres; thus informing them of the opportunities available to continue an education beyond high school.
• Cultural Field Trips: Enriches the student's cultural exposure and promotes learning through visiting museums, theaters, universities, etc.
• Career and Leadership Development: Supports each student's individual career options, and prepares the student for leadership in the community.
• Residential Stay at Major Universities: Students are exposed to a realistic picture of the entire college experience.
• Six-Week Summer Enrichment Program: Students are immersed in a concentrated, challenging, and supportive learning environment. They enroll in college preparatory classes like math, science, literature, and computers for high school and/or college credit.
• Parent Workshops: Parents of Upward Bound students are actively involved in their children's education through valuable parent workshops and activities.

Admission and Eligibility Requirements

To qualify as an Upward Bound student, you must:

• Be a 9th or 10th grader currently enrolled at Norte Vista, Corona, Centennial, Norco, Santiago, or Phoenix high school.
• Meet the Department of Education's income and/or family educational requirements.
• Demonstrate commitment to completing high school and potential for attending college.
• Submit a completed application and attend a student/parent interview with staff.

Application Procedure

As a federal program, Upward Bound is required to have an application from each participant. The following steps will guide you through the application process.

1. Request application materials from an Upward Bound staff member or your high school counselor.
2. Complete the application.
3. Return the completed application to the Upward Bound staff member or counselor, or simply mail it to the Upward Bound Program at the address below.

Purpose

Upward Bound prepares qualified high school students for a college education. The program's goal is to help first generation or low-income students enroll in and graduate from college.

Upward Bound students at Norco enroll in a two-part program (Academic Year and Summer Bridge Component) and participate in 10-12 hours of classes and activities each month. All Upward Bound events and activities are at no cost to the student.

The program seeks to inspire students with confidence in their natural abilities and to help them achieve the skills necessary for higher education. It also encourages students to pursue and complete a college education.

The Upward Bound Program was created to support students who demonstrate potential, despite barriers or limited exposure to experiences that would help them develop and follow through on a plan for college attendance.
