RCC Alumna and Associate Faculty Ashley Magaña Brings Passion and Dedication to Anthropology Program

Riverside City College (RCC) is proud to celebrate the achievements of Ashley Magaña, an RCC alumna and distinguished associate faculty in Anthropology. Since graduating from RCC, Ashley went on to complete her undergraduate studies in Anthropology at the University of California, Riverside, and later earned a Master’s degree in Archaeology from CSUSB. Now, as an educator at RCC, Ashley brings her extensive academic background and deep community connection back to the college that inspired her.
Her impact on campus has been remarkable. Professor Magaña has taken on the task of reorganizing RCC’s fossil and skull cast collection, incorporating her research on older specimens to enhance students’ learning experiences. She frequently organizes interdisciplinary events for RCC students, drawing more majors to the Anthropology program and supporting students in strengthening their academic self-concept. Her energy and enthusiasm, even while balancing her teaching responsibilities across multiple districts and a graduate program, are a testament to her commitment to student success, support, and mentorship.
“As a former RCC student, I cherish how RCC nurtured my intellectual curiosity and personal development,” says Magaña. “As a lecturer now, I feel the profound responsibility to provide my students with the same kind of environment—it is easy to view education through the lens of outcomes and objectives, focusing on grades, degrees, or professional achievements. However, the essence of education transcends these markers when I try to create a space for my students that enables them to actively shape their learning, fostering a sense of ownership and agency.”
Ashley’s familiarity with RCC and its community brings invaluable insight to her role as a lecturer. Her story not only inspires current students but also reinforces RCC’s mission to provide a supportive and empowering educational environment. Her ongoing dedication to enriching the lives of RCC students reflects the spirit of RCC’s commitment to lifelong learning, engagement, and academic excellence.
