Riverside City College Hosts Prestigious ICPC Competition
Riverside City College recently concluded its hosting of the prestigious Southern California Regional Programming Competition, a part of the International Collegiate Programming Competition (ICPC). This event, held on campus in November, continued RCC's long-standing tradition of supporting academic excellence in computing—a legacy that began in 1998 when RCC ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) teams first competed in the Southern California Regionals in Santa Barbara. By 1999, RCC students were assisting judges with Linux installations, demonstrating their technical expertise and laying the groundwork for RCC to become a host for this important competition in 2000.
The ICPC is recognized as the world’s largest and most prestigious programming contest for college students, with over 50,000 participants from 3,000 universities across 111 countries annually. Teams of three work to solve complex, real-world algorithmic problems under time pressure, showcasing skills in collaboration, creativity, and technical precision. RCC was honored to welcome more than 400 participants, including students and faculty, from notable institutions like Cal Tech, Harvey Mudd, UCLA, USC, UC San Diego, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, and several Cal State universities.
Thanks to the dedication of RCC’s faculty, staff, and student volunteers, the event ran smoothly, from early morning set-up through the evening’s wrap-up. We would like to extend a special thanks to Dean Shari Yates, whose support through the Strong Workforce Grant made this year’s competition possible.
This successful event was supported by RCC’s ACM chapter, which has been active since 1998. As the world’s largest computing society, ACM promotes professional development through career networking, lifelong learning, and leadership opportunities. RCC’s partnership with ACM strengthens our reputation as a hub for technical excellence and community in computer science.
