Riverside City College (RCC) successfully hosted its 3rd Annual Guardian Scholars Foster Youth Tax Event on Friday, March 14, 2025, providing vital tax assistance to students. The event, aimed at supporting foster youth and students in need, saw significant engagement and impact.

A total of 81 individuals RSVP’d for the event, with 44 attendees present. Of those, 34 tax returns were successfully filed, generating a collective refund amount of $39,448. These returns provide much-needed financial relief to students navigating their educational and personal journeys.

The event was made possible through a partnership with CAP Riverside, which provided 10 dedicated volunteers to assist with tax preparation. Several of these volunteers were RCC students who gained certification to prepare tax returns through accounting courses taught by Professors Jennifer Corr and Francisco Rangel. These courses equip students with the skills necessary to participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and contribute to community service initiatives.

In addition to tax preparation, RCC ensured that all volunteers and attendees were well-supported, providing breakfast, snacks, and lunch throughout the event. The collaborative effort highlights RCC’s commitment to student success, financial literacy, and community engagement.

Professors Corr and Rangel also coordinate tax preparation services on campus every Saturday, further expanding access to free, reliable tax assistance for RCC students and the broader community.
