Riverside City College (RCC) is proud to celebrate Stella Rocha, an alumna of RCC’s Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), who has not only overcome substantial life obstacles but is now using her journey to inspire students at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) as an Academic Specialist. Stella, a first-generation college graduate, stands as a beacon of resilience and advocacy for those facing similar hardships.

Stella Rocha’s path to higher education was anything but traditional. Growing up with challenges stemming from an unstable home life and later dropping out of high school, Rocha’s journey to college was marked by perseverance. Facing setbacks as a young mother, Rocha initially entered vocational training but found herself drawn back to education years later when she resolved to set a new example for her children.

After enrolling at RCC, Rocha encountered a significant learning curve navigating the world of higher education as a non-traditional student. Thanks to mentors like Dr. Michelle Williams, a dedicated EOPS counselor, Rocha gained the support and guidance she needed to continue her academic journey. “EOPS provided the community and resources that were critical to my success, allowing me to realize my potential and continue toward my degree,” Rocha shares.

Completing her associate degree at RCC, Rocha transferred to UCR, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, ultimately pursuing a Master’s in Higher Education Leadership and Student Development at California Baptist University. Now, she returns the support she received by working with UCR’s College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, overseeing learning communities for transfer students to ensure they receive the same care and guidance she experienced.

Rocha reflects on her transition from student to mentor, expressing her passion for helping others, especially those from similar backgrounds. “I never thought I’d be in a position to give back in this way,” she says. “To work at a university and encourage others to persevere, no matter the challenges, is an honor beyond words.”

Her advice to students navigating difficult circumstances is clear: “Pursue your dreams despite adversity. Find a mentor, seek resources, and don’t let anyone else steer the path to your future.” Rocha's story reminds students that with resilience, support, and dedication, success is within reach for anyone willing to pursue it.
