Student Journalists Earn 12 JACC Awards
Viewpoints, RCC’s student newspaper earned its 38th General Excellence Award since 1996. Student journalists also took home 12 individual awards at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) fall conference held virtually November 6-8.
Student journalists competed against other Southern California community college journalists in story, photo, illustration, multimedia, page design, and other submitted and on-the-spot categories.
Viewpoints Editor-In-Chief Erik Galicia won a second place News Story award in the statewide on-the-spot competition.
Managing Editor Leo Cabral collaborated with former staff member Jonathan Ramirez on an Online Photo Story Essay covering a downtown Riverside protest on June 1. The pair earned a fourth place win.
Assistant Design Editor Julian Navarro received third and fourth place honors in the Student-Designed Advertisement category.
Jair Ramirez, a former sportswriter, covered the RCC football team’s 2019 title run, and won second place for a sports game story.
Former student Daniel Hernandez won three photography awards: first place in Environmental Portrait category, fourth place for a Sports’ Feature Photo, and third place in Video Journalism for his coverage of protests in Riverside.
