Launch of Roar Call for Regalia Program
In a heartfelt initiative aimed at breaking down economic barriers, Justin Borden, DPA, Information Systems Technician at Riverside City College (RCC), has launched the "Roar Call for Regalia" project. This program provides essential graduation regalia to students who cannot afford the costs associated with their cap and gown, ensuring that every graduate can participate in their hard-earned ceremony.
Inspired by his own journey as a multi-time RCC graduate and motivated by his mother's legacy as an alumna, Borden saw a pressing need to address the financial obstacles faced by many students. “Graduation is a significant milestone, and no one should be denied this moment due to the cost of regalia,” he shares.
This year, his initiative successfully supported sixteen graduates, exceeding its original goal. And, collaborating with Meriel Anderson-McDade and the Career Closet, he secured additional gowns, demonstrating how collective efforts can amplify impact.
“This collaboration is vital in reaching our ultimate goal: ensuring no graduate is denied the right to attend graduation due to financial constraints,” he emphasizes.
The project recycles donated and purchased gowns and hoods while providing each student with a new cap and tassel as a lasting keepsake. Recipients also receive a "Proud of the Pride" card featuring a personal message from Borden, and graduates are encouraged to contribute to the program by sending positive messages to future recipients through a "Passage of the Pride" card.
With ambitions to expand this initiative to Norco College and Moreno Valley College, Justin Borden is committed to helping even more students in the future. His vision includes supporting at least 50 graduates in 2025, showcasing his dedication to making graduation accessible for all.
Borden invites anyone with regalia (hoods and gowns) to donate to this worthy cause, stating, “Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our students and help them celebrate their achievements.”
