On Saturday, August 17, Riverside City College (RCC) welcomed over 4,000 first-year students and their families for the annual Welcome Day. More than just an orientation, the event exemplified RCC’s commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment—mirroring their new campaign: “You Matter.”

The groundwork for this remarkable day was laid weeks in advance by the Welcome Day planning committee, which coordinated efforts to ensure a seamless event. On July 23, more than 30 dedicated RCC faculty, classified professionals, and students prepared 2,000 school supply bags, ensuring students would start their journey equipped for success. On the day of the event, this preparation culminated in a team of over 120 volunteers—including faculty, classified professionals, administrators, and community members—who came together with a shared goal: to warmly welcome every new Tiger and their families.

Behind the scenes, the coordination was a symphony of collaboration and care. Cathlene Castellanos, Administrative Assistant III, played a pivotal role in bringing the event to life.

“It’s crucial for RCC to lead by example with an event like Welcome Day,” Castellanos shared. “It allows students to experience firsthand RCC's dedicated support throughout their educational journey.”

The official program featured addresses from Chancellor Wolde-Ab Isaac, Ph.D., President Claire Oliveros, Ph.D., and ASRCC President Joanne Folis, who spoke on RCC’s dedication to student success and community support. In her speech, President Oliveros highlighted RCC’s commitment to holistic student support:

“We understand that success is not just about academics. It’s about being supported in every aspect of your life—whether it’s mental health, financial wellness, or finding a sense of belonging. That’s why we’ve made sure to have resources like engagement and cultural centers, academic support, and wellness services available to our students.”

She emphasized that the day’s festivities offered a glimpse into the extensive support systems available to students beyond the classroom.

Following the speeches, attendees explored a range of activities, including campus tours, performances by the Marching Tigers and cheer squad, and open houses at various engagement centers. The open house spaces individually averaged about 400 students or more. The resource fair across Terracina Drive, the Quad, and the Digital Library archway offered essential information on financial aid and career services. The Career Closet booth, managed by volunteers like high school freshman Amanda Settle, provided free clothing to students.

“I’ve never seen a community college this big with so much to offer. It changed my perspective on the community college experience,” Settle said.

The success of Welcome Day was a collective effort, reflecting the deep-seated sense of community that defines RCC. Dean of Student Services, Dr. Thomas Cruz-Soto, who spearheaded the event, expressed his gratitude:

“Welcome Day reflects RCC's deep dedication to creating an environment where every student is valued and supported. This day is about fostering a sense of belonging and community. I became Dean of Student Services because I believe in putting our students at the forefront of everything we do, and that’s why Welcome Day is so important. I want to thank my team and President Oliveros for the support they give me to do this work.”

The event's impact resonated with the attendees, including community members like Phil, a parent of college students who marveled at RCC’s offerings.

“I couldn’t believe RCC had this much to offer. The professionalism and service-first attitude of all the volunteers were amazing. I’m excited to learn more about what RCC is doing for all students,” Phil remarked.

The success of Welcome Day was made possible by the collaborative efforts of many. RCC extends its deepest gratitude to Chancellor Wolde-Ab Isaac, the RCCD Board of Trustees, President Claire Oliveros, and her leadership team for their steadfast support. Special thanks go to Liz Lecona for her innovative ideas, Juan Lopez and the design team for their creative efforts, Eddie Quintero and the warehouse team for organizing the swag bag packing party, and Jennifer Bielman for guiding the volunteers. We also want to recognize the Facilities and Grounds teams for their meticulous preparation, Assistant Professor of Counseling Courtney Carter for his work in bringing together the Academic Engagement Centers, and all the volunteers who created an atmosphere of warmth and support.

Welcome Day was not just an event—it was a promise. A promise that at RCC, every student matters, and together, we will build a brighter future.
