RCC Solar and Battery Storage Project
We are thrilled to announce the launch of our Campus Solar and Battery Storage Project, which will commence on Saturday, June 8, 2024, and continue through October 13, 2024. This initiative is an essential component of our commitment to state compliance, resource conservation, and sustainability. The project aligns with the goals of our District’s Sustainability and Climate Action Plan, focusing on Decarbonization and Climate Justice. By integrating solar-covered parking and EV charging stations, we aim to foster a greener future and provide an excellent educational opportunity for our community.
The project features a Solar PV system with a capacity of 2,473 kWdc and a BESS Tesla Megapack2 for energy storage. The construction will occur in two phases: Parking Lot C from June 8, 2024, to August 18, 2024, and Parking Lot E from June 8, 2024, to October 13, 2024. Upon completion, Parking Lot C will host an 859.68 kW DC carport solar PV system with 30 dual or 60 electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS), while Parking Lot E will feature a 1161.76 kW DC carport solar PV system. The BESS will provide 1993 kWh of storage capacity, ensuring efficient energy use and sustainability.
Construction Impact and Parking Arrangment
During the construction period, Parking Lots C and E will be intermittently unavailable. To mitigate this impact, we have arranged alternative parking options:
- Parking Structure: 1,194 spaces available
- Parking Lot Q: 134 spaces available
- Parking Lot U: 171 spaces available
- Street Parking: Fairfax Ave. will remain open
Parking Lot E will be completed in four segments, with only the active segments being gated off. Parking Lot C will be fenced off with some exceptions. Additionally, Lot C will be under 24-hour surveillance with a live feed to monitor progress.
To ensure continued access to the Kane building for services, the Vice Presidents and Deans have agreed to give up their parking stalls in Lot C. These stalls have been temporarily converted into 20-minute parking zones to facilitate quick transactions and maintain excellent customer service. Furthermore, a row of ADA parking in Lot C will be retained.
Project's Status and Update
Construction Timeline:
- Solar PV at Parking Lot C: June 8, 2024 – August 18, 2024
- Solar PV at Parking Lot E: June 17, 2024 – October 13, 2024
The project is set to significantly contribute to our sustainability efforts by creating on-site renewable energy, thereby reducing our carbon footprint. Solar power is one of the most affordable, accessible, and prevalent sources of carbon-neutral energy. Despite sunlight's vast potential, it currently accounts for less than 1% of the global electricity supply. Our project harnesses Riverside’s abundant sunlight, positioning RCC as a leader in solar energy utilization.
We acknowledge the inconvenience this construction may cause and appreciate your understanding and patience. Our goal is to complete the majority of the construction before the fall semester begins, ensuring minimal disruption to our campus activities. Thank you for supporting our transition to a more energy-efficient and sustainable campus.
