On Monday, June 19th, we will officially celebrate the federal holiday known as Juneteenth. Let this be more than just a day off of work.

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.  It also serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of people. It echoes the triumph of freedom over the shackles of slavery, reminding us of the indomitable spirit within each of us. It is a day to honor our forefathers and foremothers, who endured unimaginable hardships and fought valiantly for their liberation.

In the face of adversity, they held onto hope. They believed in a future where equality would reign supreme. Their dreams paved the way for us, the torchbearers of progress, to continue their noble mission.   As we reflect on their legacy, let us also acknowledge that our journey toward true equality is far from complete.

The image above was chosen to represent freedom for everyone. We, as an academic community, have a vital role to play. We must foster an environment that celebrates diversity and inclusivity, where all voices are heard, respected, and valued. We must actively engage in the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom, for education has the power to challenge stereotypes and ignite change. Please be the change you want to see.

Happy Juneteenth!
