Riverside City College (RCC) proudly hosted its 5th annual Taste of Nations event on November 21, 2024, as part of International Education Week. This vibrant celebration brought together students, faculty, staff, and community members to explore the rich cultural diversity represented on campus through food.

Taste of Nations is a tradition at RCC, designed to introduce the campus community to a variety of global cuisines and the cultural stories behind them. Through sample-sized portions, participants could experience dishes such as tofu spring rolls, hibachi tacos, Jamaican meat pies, baklava, and falafel, and more all crafted with authentic flavors and care.

The event's goal is to provide a low-barrier way for students to try foods they may have never encountered before, and to educate attendees about the cultural significance of these dishes. Beyond the flavors, attendees learned about the history, traditions, and geographical origins of each featured cuisine, fostering a deeper appreciation for global cultures.

“This event embodies the essence of international education,” said Megan Bottoms, RCC Student Activities Coordinator, “we celebrate the students from around the world who study here in the United States and our domestic students who enrich their education by studying abroad. Food becomes a universal language, allowing us to connect, learn, and grow together.”

A key highlight of Taste of Nations is its partnership with local vendors from Riverside and surrounding areas, supporting the region's rich ethnic food community. This year’s event featured dishes from 18 countries, marking a significant expansion since its inception five years ago.

“This isn’t just about tasting food,” Holden Stackhouse, an Student services classified employee added. “It’s about seeing yourself reflected in the celebration of culture and understanding the history that shapes who we are. Every bite tells a story, and this event brings those stories to life.”

RCC remains committed to fostering a sense of belonging and representation for all members of its diverse community. With growing attendance and participation each year, Taste of Nations continues to serve as a cornerstone of the college's celebration of international education.
