Anesthesia Technology – Associate of Science Degree and Certificate of Achievement

This program prepares students to become a Certified Anesthesia Technologist in the preparation necessary to become an integral member of the anesthesia patient care team. The program emphasizes the fundamental and advanced clinical procedures to assist licensed anesthesia providers in the acquisition, preparation, and application of various equipment required for the delivery of anesthesia care.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:

  •  Collaborate with the multi-disciplinary anesthesia care team in the development of an anesthesia plan of care for patients in areas to which they are assigned.
  • Assist the anesthesia provider in a variety of current anesthesia techniques and use of equipment for providing anesthesia.

  • Provide support for anesthesia services to all patients and types of anesthesia, including trauma and emergency cases.

  • Maintain vigilance and patient safety throughout the peri anesthetic continuum by actively protecting patients from iatrogenic complications, and utilize appropriate precautions in infection control.

  • Conducts comprehensive anesthesia related equipment checks as needed, and initiates appropriate responses when confronted with malfunctions.

  • Use critical thinking skills in assisting the anesthesia provider with patients of all types, ages, and physical conditions for a variety of surgical and medically related procedures.

  • Set up and calibrate non-invasive and invasive monitoring equipment and understand data obtained from these modalities.

  • In collaboration with the anesthesia provider, recognize and appropriately respond to anesthetic complications that occur during the perioperative period.

Associate of Science Degree

The Associate of Science Degree in Anesthesia Technology will be awarded upon completion of the degree requirements, including general education and other graduation requirements as described in the college catalog.

Program Information

  • Applicants must be at least 17 years of age to apply.
  • Applicants must have an RCC application on file and be eligible to attend RCC to be considered for admission.
  • Applicants must complete and submit an Anesthesia Technology Program application for consideration. Applications may be obtained in the rcc.edu website. Please verify current application filing period dates on the rcc.edu website.
  • Valid United States social security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) (required for clinical facilities).
  • Valid Government issued picture ID (driver’s license, identification card, passport, military ID).
  • Valid American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR card.
  • Clear criminal background, including Live Scan fingerprints, drug and health clearance at the time of program acceptance.
  • Completed physical exam and immunizations by designated date on pre-program checklist.

Applicants are highly encouraged to attend and Anesthesia Technology Information Session prior to submitting an application.

Anesthesia Technology Information Workshops
The workshops will discuss eligibility criteria relevant to the application process. These workshops are open to the public; you do not have to be enrolled at RCC to attend. The application will be posted under Application Filing Dates during open application period. The application will be available in January for the AT program. It will be available the 1st business day of January to the 1st business day of February.

The applicant completes application online and submits online. Once the application is submitted, the applicant will be notified of receipt.

Once the application is received, the Nursing Enrollment & Evaluation Specialist (NEES) will verify completion of the application and ensure eligibility requirements have been met.

The application will be available in January for the AT program. It will be available the 1st business day of January to the 1st business day of February. Applicants will be notified of their status  4-6 weeks after the deadline

20-25 students will be accepted for the program and 4-5 alternates.

Selection into the Anesthesia Technology Program occurs after all qualified applications are reviewed for completion and applicant acceptance is on a random basis. If a student is not offered a position in the program, a new application is necessary in the next application period. If a student who was selected denies their position, then an alternate is chosen on a random basis. Alternates not selected for the year that they applied will be automatically admitted the following year.

If accepted into the program, a pre-program checklist will be submitted to the applicant which contains information regarding setting up a Complio account (health records, vaccine verification, CPR card, etc.) along with other important information.

Applicants who received a pre-program checklist and acceptance to the program must attend a mandatory program orientation on a specified day. During orientation, the applicant will receive another checklist that has information regarding finger printing, uniforms, etc.

If you were not accepted in your desired program, schedule an appointment with a counselor to learn how to improve your chances in the future. This could be anything from taking classes relevant to the program to earning direct experience by volunteering. We want you to succeed, whatever form that success may take.
